Like many sexual problems, male impotence is one that both the man and the woman will feel the effects of. It can cause great distress between the couple and can impact their relationship if one does not take it as seriously as the other. Even though there are numerous reasons why a man can be impotent the problem is usually one that can be dealt with successfully.
Erectile dysfunction, to give male impotence its correct name is the condition where sex cannot take place as an erection cannot be maintained. There are various conditions surrounding the term male impotence as some men can get an erection but not all the time whereas others are unable to ever achieve an erection or only for very short periods. In America, the condition affects anything up to fifteen million men but male impotence, no matter what age you are can normally be treated successfully.
To understand impotence, it helps to have a basic understanding of how an erection happens; the penis has a large amount of spongy tissue, through which blood vessels run, and some muscle. Sexual thoughts or some type of physical stimulation, not necessarily of the penis, create signals that are sent from the nerves allowing blood to enter the penis. The result of this flow of blood into the absorbent tissue of the penis is an erection which when finished will become flaccid again as the muscles in the penis contract making the blood leave.
If the signals do not reach the nerves which control this blood flow then male impotence can occur. A number of conditions and illnesses can cause this like diabetes or alcohol to name just two.
Surgery or injuries to the bladder, prostate or male urethra may cause nerve damage and cardiovascular disease or other diseases of the blood vessels may interfere with blood flow. Nerve signals may be altered due to psychological reasons including anxiety and stress.
Dealing with impotence means going to a doctor as the first step, because this may help identify an underlying medical condition that should be treated. Often male impotence affects men as they get older, so they need to stay focused on regular exercise, quit smoking, losing weight and changing to a healthy lifestyle.
